Homeopathic remedies for dogsHomeopathic remedies for dogs

Traditional canine medication often involves administering chemical or biological agents like antibiotics and antiviral drugs to our dogs. These drugs function by suppressing the symptoms of the dog’s illness.

While they may temporarily alleviate symptoms, this approach weakens the dog’s natural defense mechanisms. Conventional medicine focuses on symptom relief but fails to address the root cause of the illness or strengthen the immune system.

In fact, it can further compromise the system, making the dog more susceptible to frequent illnesses.

On the other hand, homeopathy for dogs works by bolstering the body’s innate immune system, enabling it to combat disease-causing agents. This approach achieves two significant goals:

Firstly, it effectively and sometimes rapidly treats diseases without the typical side effects of many conventional medicines.

Secondly, by enhancing the immune system, it reduces the susceptibility to diseases and prevents their recurrence, promoting long-term overall health.

When considering the well-being of our dogs, I strongly advocate for homeopathy. It prioritizes the strengthening of their immune systems, which I believe yields substantial benefits for their health in the long run.

Hypericum perforatum (St John’s wort) – nerves

Hypericum, a homeopathic solution, exhibits a remarkable affinity for nerves, often termed the ‘Arnica of the nerves’. It aids in enhancing the immune response in animals grappling with nerve damage, crush injuries, or injuries in nerve-dense regions.

During birthing, it proves beneficial for pregnant animals, particularly in preventing hip paralysis. Additionally, it serves as a beneficial remedy for young animals that have suffered injuries or crush injuries during birth.

Nux vomica (poison nut) – Digestive system

Nux vomica is primarily recommended for addressing constipation in pets. It effectively aids when a dog or cat strains during elimination, yet passes minimal or no stool. If straining isn’t evident, Nux vomica might not be the appropriate remedy.

Furthermore, it serves as a remedy for liver health and aids in restoring digestion after an upset. Post-surgical use supports liver detoxification and stimulates appetite. Additionally, it can manage vomiting resulting from overeating, dietary changes, or rich foods, as well as colitis triggered by similar issues.

Nux vomica is beneficial for reinforcing weak back legs, particularly when there’s a tendency to drag the feet, and it can help alleviate mild lower back pain.

Ledum palustre (Marsh Labrador Tea, Rhododendron tomentosum) – Insect (tick) bites

Homeopathic Ledum Palustre is the best defense against Lyme and other tick diseases.

Ledum stands as the primary option for treating puncture wounds. Dogs requiring this remedy often exhibit anger and irritability, preferring solitude. It proves effective for insect bites, stings, snakebites, flea bites, as well as puncture injuries affecting the eyes and various body parts.

Apis mellifica – swelling

Apis mellifica is effective for various types of swelling caused by vaccinations, insect bites, hives, rashes, and bee stings. It’s also beneficial for joint swelling accompanied by warmth. Optimal potencies are typically 6C, 12C, or 30C, with a recommended dosage every 20 minutes during acute situations.

Arnica – pain

Arnica is beneficial for general pain, stiffness from overexertion, soreness, and musculoskeletal injuries. It’s also effective in reducing bleeding and bruising. It’s recommended as the initial remedy following any form of physical trauma.

The recommended potencies for Arnica are typically 6C, 12C, or 30C, administered every 20 minutes during acute situations. For older dogs with arthritis-related pain, Arnica can be used daily. Additionally, it can aid in minimizing bleeding and bruising after surgery.

Aconite – panic

Aconite, recognized as the “panic” remedy, effectively addresses emotional trauma, shock, mental anxiety, and restlessness. It’s beneficial for dogs experiencing fear during storms or in response to loud noises. Additionally, it aids in the initial stages of feverish conditions and inflammations accompanied by anxiety.

Belladonna – fever

Belladonna can be helpful in cases of fever, elevated temperature, and overall discomfort while awaiting veterinary care. It’s also recognized for its efficacy in reducing both the frequency and intensity of seizures.

Calendula – skin & infections

Calendula, available as both an oral remedy and topical ointment, is beneficial for treating skin and external infections.

As an outstanding healing agent, keeping a tube of the ointment is recommended for topical application on scrapes, infections, and wounds. You can also obtain a tincture and dilute it (1 part tincture to 10 parts water) to cleanse cuts or wounds. When taken orally, using a 6C, 12C, or 30C potency 2-3 times a day enhances skin and superficial wound healing.

Hepar sulphur – abscesses

Hepar sulphur is effective in addressing painful abscesses across the body and infected anal glands. It’s also beneficial for various infections. Optimal potency is 30C, recommended at a frequency of 2-3 doses per day during the acute phase.

Rhus tox

Rhus tox is versatile, aiding arthritis that improves with movement, musculoskeletal injuries, red swollen eyes, skin infections, and itching. It’s particularly helpful in healing ligament injuries and tendon strains. With its diverse applications, it can be used regularly for dogs with chronic arthritis, especially those that initially struggle with stiffness when starting to move.

Ruta graveolens

Ruta graveolens (Ruta grav) is excellent for treating tendon or ligament injuries, often complementing the effects of Rhus tox and Arnica. This trio forms a beneficial combination for managing arthritis and overall body aches. When used daily, 6C or 12C potencies are recommended. For more acute situations, consider 30C potencies administered every few hours.
